In a peaceful location on the north bank of the Thames, opposite Eel Pie Island, stands the White Swan, a traditional pub, built in the 17th century.
From the pavement, steep steps lead up to a small veranda, where patrons bask in the afternoon sun.
PHOTO - White Swan, Twickenham, Middx The unfussy interior consists of one L-shaped bar with simple furnishings and a bare wooden floor. A deep recessed bay window has an open view across the river.
Twickenham's strong ties with Rugby football are reflected in a prized collection of memora- belia and photographs in glass display cabinets.
The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, enhanced in winter by open fires. On warmer days the beer garden on the rivers edge is in demand.
The river bursts its banks here quite regularly, hence the pubs elevated position. Close by is Flood Lane.
The White Swan is a perfect place to stop for refreshments after a riverside walk, or a stroll at Marble Hill House, or a frolick in nearby York Gardens, with its naked nymphs.
