The sign on the wall reads 'entrance at high tide' and points to a flight of stairs. The river floods regularly, the ebb and flow of the Thames is several metres. That's the price you pay for having one of the best located pubs around.
On warm days, customers spill out onto the towpath to enjoy the river and the splendid views of Richmond Bridge. In winter the bright and cosy bars have welcoming real fires, one of them under a window!
Prints show the Thames in its various guises, frozen, swollen and menacing, but for the most part restful and relaxing, especially from the comfort of the bar.
The White Cross stands on the site of the Monastery of the Observant Friars, the white cross their insignia. There has been a pub here since the end of the 18th century. This one was built in 1835.
