Young's Brewery have taken over this quaint little pub and apart from some minor alterations and a facelift, have left it pretty well untouched. However it is no longer a free house and sells only Young's beers.
The two bars, public and saloon but barely distinguishable, are separated by a panelled partition and a tiny serving area. The decor is about as simple as you get; worn softwood floor, dark oak panels and simple furnishings. The amosphere is warm and comfortable.
The staff are friendly and welcoming. Most of the customers are workers from local offices or Borough Market opposite.
Ambitious plans for a £10 million regeneration of the market are being considered; one idea is to re-site the Floral Hall portico from Covent Garden here. However fears of total demoltion have been raised.
The area has some interesting old buildings and is full of surprises. Clink Prison Museum and Southwark Cathedral are nearby.
