Greenwich has many attractions; the Royal Observatory, the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, Gypsy Moth and Greenwich Market, are just a few. It has some outstanding pubs too, and the Trafalgar is one of them.
This magnificent Regency style pub was built in 1837, the year Queen Victoria came to the throne. In the mid-19th century this was one of several grand Greenwich pubs, which became famous for their Whitebait Suppers, attended by senior Members of Parliament; the Liberals at the Trafalgar, the Tories at the Ship (demolished). Many came by river, still the nicest way to reach Greenwich.
Eventually the dinners lost their attraction and many of the pubs went out of business. In 1915 the Trafalgar became a seamen's hostel, then a working men's club.
The pub was refurbished and re-opened in 1965, winning a Civic Trust award. Its ground floor has large inter-connecting rooms, with timber floors and dark panelled walls, each has a river view. Upstairs there is a large ballroom complete with chandeliers.
Whitebait (young herring) is on the menu still. They're dipped in flour, deepfried and eaten whole. They were locally caught, but now are imported. Whitebait are beginning to return to the Thames, so who knows...?
