Hidden away in the back-streets of Chelsea, the Surprise has changed very little over the years. Its customers too, are the same agreeable mix of Chelsea 'trendies' and older, casually dressed gentlemen, out for a quiet pint and a friendly chat.
Considering its address, this is a remarkably ordinary pub with a public bar atmosphere. There's even a dart board.
Around the horseshoe counter are plain benches, half wood-clad walls and a bare oak floor. A small lounge/dining area at the rear provides a little more in the way of comfort.

It would be wrong to give the impresson this is an uncomfortable pub, far from it. It is warm and welcoming.
There is a good selection of food and wines, as well as some well kept real ales.
The pubs origins are Victorian, built during the expansion of the early nineteenth century. Its name is taken from a Royal Naval ship, either the Surprise that returned Napoleon's body to France or, as the pub's sign depicts, the one that took Charles II to France and safety.
