Thomas Cubbitt was a prolific builder of the nineteenth century who built a great many houses in the Belgrave area. He built pubs too.
The Plumber's Arms is said to have been named in honour of the craftsmen who helped build the magnificent houses that surround it.
The pub sign shows the arms of the Plumber's Company. It would have been frequented by butlers, grooms and footmen too, although not neccassarily in the same bar.
It is a pleasant pub, but little remains of its Victorian past.
The Plumber's Arms has a place in recent history though. It was in this pub on a wet November night in 1974, that a terrified Lady Lucan came in, shocked and bleeding.
She said she had been attacked by an intruder and that her nanny had been murdered.
Later that night, her husband, Lord Lucan, briefly visited a friend in Sussex. Then he was gone...never to be seen again.
