Despite its rural setting, this delightful, picturesque pub is within a mile of junction 25 of the M25. It started life in the seventeenth century as kennels for James I's hunting dogs, set as it was then, in a vast forest. It has a cosy country pub atmosphere, with its low matchboarded ceilings, oak beams and small low windows.

There are several rooms which vary in age and character. Look for the carvings, old fireplaces and prints of the local area. At the rear of the pub is a conservatory and pretty paved garden. The food is popular here, with the emphasis on prime Angus steaks (£13) and filling pies (£8). There's also a good selection of real ales and wines. For gardening enthusiasts Capel Manor gardens and college are close by. Capel Manor Gardens Capel Manor College |
