It is thought that this pub was named after the first orange tree to be brought to Britain, which was planted at Kew Gardens.
The original Orange Tree pub dates from the late 18th century, but the specimen we see today was built in the pub boom of the 1890's, its Flemish style brick and terracotta exterior, typical of many late Victorian buildings.
This is a large pub by any standards, and appears larger still, by the removal of its internal partitions to form one enormous L-shaped bar. The position of the three fireplaces gives away the pubs original layout.
The interior decoration is typically Victorian, with high embossed ceilings and dark, highly polished hardwood fittings in mahogany and oak.
The back bar area has a beautiful six feet high carved fire mantle and massive mahogany pillars.
Fame for the Orange Tree came in the 1970's when it housed the Orange Theatre, the first of its kind. Many productions transfered to the West End, but success meant the theatre had to move to new premises next door. The old theatre is now the venue for a comedy club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (details 020 8286 9032).
