Samuel Smith's occupies the Old Brewery in Tadcaster which was established in 1758 and bought by John Smith in 1847. When Samuel inherited the brewery in 1886 he changed the name to Samuel Smith's Brewery. It remains a independent family business and is deeply traditional, in Tadcaster they have retained horse drawn drays used to deliver beers to its local pubs. Samuel Smith's shuns many of the practices of its larger competitors, in particular 'public relations'.
Samuel Smith has acquired many of London's finest old pubs and has painstakingly restored them to their former layout and decoration. They stock mostly their own beers and brew only one real ale, Old Brewery Bitter, which is often sold at half the price other pubs charge locally for a session bitter. They produce their own stouts and lagers, fruit beers and cider which are generally of a very high standard.
Having good beers and great pubs it would be natural to advertise the fact, but Samuel Smith is almost secretive about its business and just does its own thing, quietly. Websites have been set up to give the company the exposure (both good and bad) it so obviously doesn't want. This of course could be a clever ploy to create a mystique, like a reclusive actor or rock star. More likely its a bit of Yorkshire attitude. Tek it or leave it.
