A handful of interesting pubs in London, Oxfordshire and Sussex. The highlight is probably the North Star at Steventon, Oxfordshire, an untouched country pub gem, plain and simple, a place where the step-back-in-time cliché is apt. In complete contrast is the Barley Mow in Clifton Hampden, a delightful 400 year old thatched pub, now a Chef & Brewer outlet with a lot of changes, but still a pretty place for a pint. A late 19th century photograph shows what it was like.
In London just a couple of interesting pubs. The Rising Sun in Tottenham Court Road; most people would pass this architectural gem without noticing its amazing façade of fluted columns and cherubs. Inside some rare high relief wall paper and brass plate ceiling. The King and Queen in the back streets of Fitzrovia is a popular real ale pub with constantly changing guest ales. Food is served in generous portions. Very blokey, but a good pint.
In Sussex two pubs with wonderful views; one high up across the 'wild brooks' and the other at sea level overlooking Chichester Harbour. Severe relaxation going on, helped by late Indian summer weather. Sitting in the warmth of the afternoon sun with a good pint and good company...bliss.
