This narrow corner pub is in Wardour Street, the spiritual home of the British film industry. Not long ago, runners carrying huge piles of film cans were a familiar sight. Today's customers may still work in film, television, music or advertising; Soho has always been a place for creative people from Mozart to Behan.
The Ship is a lived-in pub, slightly run down but familiar and comfortable, a stark contrast to the stainless steel and bright lights of the modern bars nearby. That said, it still has some glitz to boast about, despite being almost destroyed during World War II. The windows are etched and cut glass and there is some notable carved joinery, particularly behind the bar counter, the bar back has a few decorative glass panels. Some fascinating old photographs of people in pubs give an insight into how much people and pubs have changed.
This is not however a place for a quiet pint, as with most pubs in Soho, music plays constantly. Usually it's not too loud and won't put you off a good pint of Fuller's.
