This comfortable and pleasant pub is particularly popular at lunchtimes and offers a range of sandwiches, baguettes and hot meals, including steaks, at reasonable prices. The real ales are well kept and there's usually a wide selection to chose from. It is closed at weekends, but is available for private hire.
The prolific master builder, Thomas Cubitt, built hundreds of houses in Belgravia in the 1820's. He built pubs too. He also employed a great many plumbers. The pub's sign shows the arms of the Plumber's Company and it is said this pub was named in honour of the tradesmen who helped build the magnificent houses that surround it. More practically, it would have been a meeting place and informal labour exchange for plumbers. Butlers, grooms, footmen and other emplyees who served in the great houses, would have met here too.
The Plumber's Arms has a place in recent history. It was in this pub on a wet November night in 1974, that a terrified Lady Lucan came in, shocked and bleeding. She said she had been attacked by an intruder and that her nanny had been murdered. Later that night, her husband, Lord Lucan, briefly visited a friend in Sussex. Then he was gone...never to be seen again.
