The pretty Sussex village of Alfriston has many ancient buildings and the George Inn is one of them. Granted a licence in 1397, it was originally a single story hall, the upper floor was added in the 16th century. Today it is a splendid traditional pub with heavy beams, exposed brickwork and large inglenook fireplaces.
It serves good ales, a wide selecton of wines by the glass and excellent food, including locally sourced fish and game. Dishes include belly pork, game casserole and lamb shank (c. £15) and sharing platters from £11. There are six smart ensuite bedrooms (not inspected) from £90 per night. The George Inn -
