Health Committee wants minimum pricing
2010-01-27

A Health Committee report on alcohol, published in January 2010, says that the drinks industry depends on hazardous and harmful drinkers for three-quarters of its sales. The committee made up of a group of cross-party MP's has called for:

  • the introduction of minimum pricing
  • a rise in the duty on spirits and industrial white cider
  • tighter and totally independent regulation of alcohol promotion
  • vastly improved alcohol treatment services
  • better early detection and intervention
  • a mandatory labelling scheme for alcoholic drinks
  • much better use of expert advice

The committee dismissed claims that minimum pricing would hit moderate drinkers. An example given of 40p per unit works out 11p per week more for a moderate drinker. A moderate drinker in this case consumes 6 units per week, which roughly equates to 4 glasses of wine or less than 3 pints of average strengh beer. It says a woman drinking the maximum 15 units per week would cost £6.

The committee chairman, Kevin Barron said unit pricing 'will reduce binge drinking' and will 'help traditional pubs in their battle against cut price supermarket offers.' Which sounds like good news for pubs, however the report also claims that if people drank responsibly sales would drop 40 per cent.

Barron went on to say he was shocked at the facts of alcohol misuse and accused successive governments for failing to tackle the problem. He said that a 'fundamental cultural change brought about by evidence-based policies' was required.
