Once a country pub in the hamlet of Garratt, the Leather Bottle dates from the early eighteenth century. Outwardly it has changed little since then.
Inside, what would have been several very small rooms, has been knocked through into a long narrow bar. Low ceilings, small windows and an open fireplace give a 'cottagey' feel. Extensions provide more room at the rear, including a curious upper galleried bar.
A good lunchtime menu, has many dishes under £5. The large garden has ample seating, some with heaters.
There is a car park too.

Although small, Garratt had its own 'mayor'. In what is thought to have started as a protest against the landlords enclosing the land, the local people raised money to fight their case in court. After each general election, from 1747 to 1796, they held mock elections for the 'Mayor of Garratt'.
This sincere local protest, began to attract crowds of tens of thousands, and eventually turned into a bizarre carnival.
Garratt was swallowed up in London's urban expansion of the last century and its famous past almost forgotten.
