This cavernous Victorian pub was built just over 100 years ago, when a speculative pub building boom produced huge and lavishly decorated pubs.
The work of the skilled Victorian craftsman, so often ripped-out and discarded, survives here with only a few alterations.

On every wall and partition, there's a wealth of engraved and embossed glass, sparkling mirrors and gleaming ceramic tiles.
The outside too, has its share of decoration, with scrolls, urns and carved kings heads.
To modern tastes these pubs may appear over elaborate, but to the Victorians, this was not only modern but the height of fashion.
The big screen television and gaming machines tend to clash with Victorian style, but pubs have to attract custom and at least here its grand beauty has been preserved.
