Winner of 1993 English Heritage /CAMRA restoration award, this is a splendid late Victorian pub (1898) hidden in a side street, a stones throw from Smithfield meat market.
Its tall narrow facade is clad in tiles, from rooftop to doorstep. It was built at the end of the Victorian pub-boom, its lavish decorations designed not only to attract customers and enhance its value but to exude respectability.
The interior is Edwardian. At the end of the long bar there are several small booths.

The one on the left with the stained glass is the original, the one next to it a more recent addition. The floor tiles give it away, it was once the gents toilet.
This pub is full of interesting nooks and crannies, so explore.
It has a special license to suit the hours worked at Smithfield market. Unsurprisingly meat features heavily on the menu.
Enjoy a huge English Breakfast (£7.50) and wash it down with a pint of beer...even at 7am.
