This imposing pub stands on a corner, next to the Thames, near Putney Bridge.
This is the starting point for the University Boat Race; the annual duel between the rowing crews of Oxford and Cambridge, which began in 1829 and still attracts huge crowds.
The Duke has always had a connection with rowing and at one time let one of its cellars as a boathouse to a local rowing club.
There have been several pubs on this site, dating from at least the early 19th. century. The current pub was rebuilt in 1864 and completely refurbished in 1894. It was then an hotel which served travellers by road and by river.

There are three bars, the public at the front, saloon in the middle and a dining room at the rear, which overlooks the river. All have kept their Victorian splendour.
There are many examples of beautiful etched and embossed glass, gleaming cut mirrors and richly carved mahogany, with lavish swirls.
This is a classic pub which has preserved its character and indentity.
