The Dog & Bull is a good old 'spit and sawdust' drinkers' pub with bare floorboards, smokey panelling and cream painted walls.
The main bar area is served by a central island counter. There are two further rooms, one being the dining area, which is non-smoking whilst food is served.
The delightful courtyard garden at the rear (centuries ago, an animal pen), is brick paved and planted with flowers.
Surrey Street has a daily fruit and vegetable market. During the day the pub is a lively and friendly place, where stall holders and shoppers escape the bustle; in the evenings it is less busy, a good place to relax and enjoy a well-kept pint of Youngs.
Formerly known as Butchers Row, Surrey Street market was granted a Royal Charter in 1276. Even in medievil times Croydon was a bustling and important town.
Until 1758, the Archbishop of Canterbury lived nearby at the Old Palace, away from the stench of London.
It is thought a pub has been here since the 13th century but it's not until the late sixteenth century we know a pub, called the Bell, definitely stood here. It was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Surrey Street. It is unclear when the pub became known as the Dog & Bull. Youngs leased it in 1832 and have owned the freehold for nearly a century.
