Many huge Victorian pubs have fallen into disrepair or worse. Not this one.
Situated in pretty Dulwich Village, the Crown & Greyhound is a vital part of the community. Apart from serving good beer and food, it acts as venue for the wine society, a poetry group, holds wedding receptions and has a license for civic marriages.
At weekend lunchtimes it's a family pub and is geared for children. Friday and Saturday nights it’s packed with young adults. Like most pubs it changes it’s role throughout the day and week. Unlike many pubs, it has the space. There are some six seating areas including the restaurant and new conservatory. Outside is a nice garden with plenty of seating.

Built in the late 19th century it has Victorian solidity. The lofty ceilings are decorated in an unusual deep relief plaster pattern. A central bar, with original fittings, has partitions running off it which divide the pub into three main areas. The entrance to one of these proclaims ‘Billiard Room’ in etched and cut glass panels. Alas no. The largest bar has wooden floors and is simply furnished with some beautifully carved wooden settles. There’s a no-smoking area behind a divider.
Delightful Dulwich Park, Dulwich College Picture Gallery ( recently refurbished) and the Horniman Museum are local attractions. The village has some wonderful Georgian architecture.
