Manager Adrian Walterworth was writing up the minutes of the last cricket club meeting when we popped in. Cricket is very important at the Cricketers, not only does it have its own pub team but probably the most picturesque pitch anywhere.
Cricket has been played on The Green for centuries, the first recorded game in 1660. The pub was known as the "Cricket Players" in the early 18th century and shortened to its present name around 1750.
The original pub burnt down, a fact lamented in the Illustrated London News, and was rebuilt in 1834 on the original 18th century cellars.
The Green, formerly the village green, is bounded by some of Richmond's most beautiful and historic houses, their cohesive architecture spanning several centuries.
Medievil Shene Palace was situated in the southwest corner, it was rebuilt by Henry VII who renamed it Richmond, after his earldom in Yorkshire. His granddaughter, Elizabeth I, died there in 1603.
Back to the cricket - from the end of April to September they play three matches per week at the Green, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. A local by-law prevents Sunday matches....pity.
