There's been a pub on this site since 1430. In 1695 Gray's Inn Coffee Shop was built here, servicing the needs of the Inns of Court which surround it. Coffee was introduced into Britain in mid 17th century and became the height of fashion. Coffee shops were offshoots of taverns and sold other drinks including tea, ale and beer.
Set back from the road, this one had a garden at the front, but London was on the brink of CITTIE of YORKE London WC1
a building boom and the garden was built upon.
Over the years the pub changed its name and shape. Partially demolished and rebuilt in the 1890's, some of the original 17th century fabric may have been incorporated.
A further rebuild in the early 20th century produced the romantic medieval grand hall we see today at the rear of the pub.
On a gantry above the long bar, stands massive 1000 gallon wine butts. Along the walls are small wooden cubicles where lawyers have private conversations with their clients.
An ingenious triangular stove(m.1815) stands in the centre of the bar. It has no visible chimney. The smoke is ducted away below the floor.
There are two other bars. One at the front, neat and wood panelled. The other in the cellar, newly refurbished and brilliant white.
