Close to the river, the Black Lion is a popular pub for its location, garden and food. It also has a car park, a rarity in these parts.
It was built at least 200 years ago on the site of a piggery. It’s thought a pig farmer had started brewing and decided to change career.
There is one, open bar which divides naturally in to three areas, each has a mix of low ceiling, floorboards and panelling.

The most distinctive is the long room at the rear, formerly a skittle alley and once home to the Black Lion Skittle Club. Alas, commercial pressures saw its demise.
There’s a nice seating area outside under a very old, gnarled chestnut tree, thought to be older than the pub itself. The food is popular, especially the Sunday lunchtime carvery. The Black Lion has a rather unfortunate ghost story. Almost 200 years ago, Francis Smith, an excise officer, decided to investigate the supernatural goings on and lay in wait for the ghost, gun at the ready. In the dead of night the ghost appeared, he fired, killing a bricklayer by the name of Thomas Milward.
