They were up to no good at the Bell & Crown. As the pub sign recalls, this was a place where smugglers landed their contraband. They needed to chose their time well, as the Thames drops several metres at low tide to reveal its muddy bed.
Most of today's customers come for the excellent food, good selection of wines and quality real ales, duty paid of course. Food is available all day, a new and welcome trend amongst London pubs.
Another attraction is its superb location on the north bank of the Thames at Strand on the Green, near Chiswick, a surprisingly quiet and tranquil spot.

The large bar area is comfortable and spotless. It has a variety of seating areas; around the fireplace a favourite in the winter and the conservatory is always popular, with its riverside view. Just outside is a patio area and beyond, picnic benches next to the towpath.
The food servery is off the main bar. A flight of steps leads down to another, bright conservatory at towpath level.
It's always a pleasure to visit the Bell & Crown, whatever the weather.
