When 'tap' is used in the name of a pub it usually refers to the pub being the brewery outlet pub (or tap room) where brewery workers would go for a pint.
At the end of the lane, on the rivers edge, is the old brewery, now converted into offices.
The pub was originally owned by one of the legends of British brewing, John Courage. This was his first pub, bought at the end of the 18th century.
It's wooden front is plain and simple. Inside it's the same, a no frills workers pub. |
There are several rooms devoted to games. One has fruit machines (but at least they're tucked away) another a pool table and another a dart board. In the front bar the table tops have shove-ha'penny and checkerboards inlaid.
Through a low and narrow gap in the wall, is another long narrow bar where customers relax and play cards.
Pubs like this were once commonplace but now are rare. Let's hope this one is left to be itself. |
