Its reputation for good beer started in the 70's when it was one of the first free houses to sell real ale from independent breweries; this reputation continues with some very well kept real ales. Today it has a good reputation for food as well, with a wide choice of interesting dishes, including some excellent Mediterranean style bar food as well as traditional fayre.
For those with deeper pockets, there's an attractive panelled dining room at the rear which has an extensive lunch and dinner menu. On Sundays the menu changes again. Expect to pay around £20 to £25 for 3 courses.
