This striking corner pub has changed little on the outside, judging by photographs from a generation ago. Its green glazed tiles at street level, honey coloured bricks above and second floor dome, look just the same. The only recent addition, a profusion of bright hanging baskets.
Inside it's a different matter, various alterations have simplified the layout to a one roomed bar, with a central counter. The floor is bare and the furniture a collection of painted tables and odd chairs. The look is of a continental cafe.

The Alma still has some of its Victorian decoration; not least a superb solid mahogany staircase and carved fireplace. A late 19th century make-over saw the addition of delicately painted mirrors. In the large and airy dining room at the rear, a freize was discovered and restored. The Alma has reputation as a gastro-pub, the food is excellent and fairly priced at around £7 for a main course.
